The Waterfront Inn - Things to do on The Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is a great place for holidaying with the family, walking with friends or just enjoying a calming weekend break away from the bustle of the mainland.

During your stay with us we will be happy to help you plan your days, with free leaflets and helpful advice from our friendly and knowledgeable staff. If you are walking we can provide packed lunches on request.

shanklin beach isle of wight

Shanklin itself has a lovely, long, sandy beach which is ideal for strolling along (you can easily walk all the way to Sandown in about half an hour) or using as a base for long, hot (hopefully!) summer days.

There are plenty of watersports available in season, from wind-surfing and canoeing to jet-skiing.

As an interesting contrast to the beach, and just a short walk up the cliff steps (of course you can drive or take the bus as well) is Shanklin Old Village which is populated by charming thatched pubs and quaint curiosity and gift shops. There are also some beautiful gardens and parks dotted around the Old Village including Rylstone Gardens with its Bandstand and fabulous cliff-top views over the sea.

shanklin chine

Then there's Shanklin Chine – a gorge with a drop of 32m (105ft) to sea level and a length of just over 400m. The Chine has been an attraction for centuries and the poet Keats said of it: "The wondrous Chine here is a very great Lion; I wish I had as many guineas as there have been spy-glasses in it.".

It was used in the Second World War as an assault course and PLUTO, the pipeline under the sea, ran through it (a piece can still be seen today).

Shanklin Chine was opened to the public in 1817 and has proved extremely popular ever since.
